Recognizing that levels of need for Internet protection vary from user to user; Bsafe Online uses two separate filter models that perform differently. The white-list filter operates with the assumption that a Web site is bad until proven to be good, while the black-list filter expects a site to be good until proven otherwise.

White List—Blocked Until Reviewed and Approved

At the core of Bsafe’s white-list protection is the site evaluation team and a growing database of more than 1.8 million sites they have personally reviewed.

When a Web address is entered in your Internet browser, the software first checks to see if it is a Web site that has already undergone Bsafe’s extensive review process. If it has not, you White-List Model are prompted to submit the site for evaluation. You will receive notification by e-mail when the review has been completed, usually within 24 hours.

If the site you are trying to access has already been reviewed, the categories Bsafe’s staff has assigned to it are compared to the category preferences you have established. There are 34 discretionary categories, such as games and sports, which you can choose to block or allow, and other categories, such as pornography, which are always blocked. Based on these findings, access to the requested site is given or refused.

The practice of personally reviewing each site before you do, assuming it is bad until proven to be good, provides maximum protection.

Black List—Accessible Until Reviewed and Blocked

Black-List Model

In contrast to the white-list filter is the black-list filter, which offers greater freedom but also greater risk.

Requested sites are compared by the software to a database of sites. If the site you have requested does not match any of the categories that we explicitly block or that you have requested we block for you, it is assumed to be good, and you are given immediate access to the uncategorized site.

While we employ the latest technology and best databases available, this no-wait approach is less reliable than that of the white-list filter because of the fact that new sites appear online every day and it may take a little while for bad ones to be discovered and added to black-list databases.

Have Your Cake and Eat It Too

What if you need both filtering approaches for your family or business? Bsafe offers extreme flexibility by allowing you to use either black-list filtering or white-list filtering for profiles. This enables you to maintain a high level of restriction for some members while allowing others more freedom to exercise discretion in their use of the Internet.
