The most common method of Internet filtering is a “black list” approach, which starts by evaluating and assigning categories to Web sites based on their text. These computer-generated results are stored in a database. Users of black-list filters are blocked from accessing any known objectionable sites that are included in the database. If a site has not been categorized and added to the list, it is not blocked. While this is a good place to start, thousands of new sites appear online each day, leaving a potentially serious protection gap when relying on this method alone.
A “white list” filter takes the opposite approach, allowing users to access only known good sites. Sites that are not a part of the white-list database are automatically blocked. However, unnecessary limitations may be experienced by those who use packaged white lists since new sites with valuable information are also blocked because they were not included in the original list.
